so I went to get an alignment on my 96 XJ today and got told that the hole where the tie rod end and the knuckle is connected is worn out. so before I replace that, I was wondering if there are any easy upgrades i could possibly do or just some tips!

that wont help if the hole in the knuckle is opened up, right? or does it have bigger TREs?

You could go 1ton with moog TREs and ream out the knuckles . Aaron has the reamer

What size tires are you running?
If the tapered hole is egged out chances are the nut wasn't kept tight.

Either upgrade to a steering setup that would require the knuckle to be reamed or hit the scrapyard for a new knuckle. If you end up replacing the knuckle that would also be the time for ball joints if needed. I run the iron rock offroad kit with the bigger hiems that requires reaming the knuckle. I like it but I don't see many people running it.

This is your best option in my opinion.Make sure you have it welded properly. I think it's supposed to be tig welded. I did a quick mig weld when I did mine and the weld cracked causing a shimmy that was tough to diagnose because the joint was still tight. Anyway...getting your tie rod up a few inches is an added bonus if you go off road at all.

I mig welded a bunch of those and the only issue I ever had was one of the inserts cracking after many years of hard use.

Ill probably get a new knuckle but this is some good info for once i do one ton steering. im only running33's so hopefully I do it right this time and won't run into this issue again

If you are going to upgrade tie rod, you can save a bunch of money over the Currie by swapping just the tie rod for a 5.2L ZJ tie rod. While you at it do the over-the-knuckle conversion.
Moog parts needed:
1 #DS1312 Tie rod
1 #ES3096L Short Tie Rod Ends(outer driver side)
1 #ES2079S Adjustment Sleeve -
So with this I can use the stock set up for now and I can upgrade to one ton steering with this? Probably smart to do the insert on both sides?

You can only flip the driver's side.

The 1 ton tre is so big u just ream out the knuckle. No need for any kind of insert.
U can drill out your existng tre hole and insert the goforit part from the bottom as a repair for the stock set up, but i would just go for a new or junk yard part.
