Trying to figure out what the best option is towards locking my axle.... I cant afford a arb eaton or ox.... So im sitter gonna go with a lockright or spartan locker. Should i do the rear or the front axle... Ive been getting mixed reviews on the subject. And wanted to throw in that there is a dana 44 going into the rear... So no worries on the danaturdy5
which axle to lock....

Front.

Rear

which one first? rear.
in my humble opinion, just wait until you do both at the same time. i had a detroit in the rear 44 i put in, and lockright in the front 30. don't forget about shafts, esp. if you crawl a lot ....

With a yj i would say front and buy a posi lock. Boom, selectable locker.

Exactly.

Also, i haven't heard great things about the lockright/aussie/spartan or any others that dont replace the entire carrier in a rear axle that isnt a 1 ton. I loved it up front though: cheap and easy. Still holding up.

Exactly.
x3 wheeled one in my old 30 for years. And sold it when I was done -

I always remembered you running TJ shafts. Or am I thinking of SLOPAR?

I thought Aaron had an extra D44 Detroit laying around or did he throw that in his street Jeep. That would be a good option for Mike. -
If you budget won't let you buy a selectable I would put it up front.

Weld it.

which axle can you afford to fix after you break it?

Like every Jeep question it's never an easy answer. What size tires do you intend to run, and have you re-geared yet. I'd consider that first before just throwing a locker on one end or the other. I have lockrites front and rear, but I still have a 2 piece front axle on the passenger side which in effect unlocks the diff in 2wd. I don't know how it would handle on the street with a solid axle. Do you intend to do a front axle upgrade? If so do it before (during) the locker install so you're not stuck with a 27 spline locker if you want to do the upgrade later. A rear locker is better than open and a safe choice, but if I was locking one end I'd do the front with a selectable. Better to lift yourself over a rock than to try to push through it.

A lockright in the front acts just like an open diff in 2wd on the road.
Yj or Tj shafts, doesn't matter.

Which is why I said do the front first. He's gonna wheel this a couple times a year so on-road performance is still the priority (Mike, correct me if I'm wrong), putting a non-selectable in the back is gonna make it drive like crap on the road.

putting a non-selectable in the back is gonna make it drive like crap on the road. Why does everyone think this? I've always run Detroits and love how my Jeep drives on the road. He is driving a YJ, not an effing Escalade.

Exactly.
If I was going to put a lunchbox type locker in the rear of a street Jeep, I'd go with something like the Powertrax No-Slip rather than the Lockright.

Does yours ever randomly decide to jump lanes when turning? I've been in others when it happens and it's a bit unnerving to say the least.
